Graduation Party Planning 2009

Written by Ashely Mastandrea | Wednesday, April 01 2009 00:00
Graduation Party Planning 2009
Celebrate the class of 2009 with these tips.

A graduation party is an opportunity for friends and family to gather and celebrate the accomplishments of one or more individuals. Some celebrations are large, some small; some honor a high school grad, some a college grad or someone who has completed vocational training.

No matter how or who you celebrate, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning a graduation party, and many sources can be found nearby.

Get the Party Started

The first task to planning any party is to brainstorm. Think about how your graduate would like to spend this day. The most important thing to remember is to keep the graduate in mind when making all your party- planning decisions. It is, after all, his or her day.

The size of the party can range from large to small. Host the party at home, a local restaurant or banquet hall. Serve a meal buffet-style, or have a family-style dinner. Invite friends and family together, or have separate parties for both.

Decorate to make the day special. Hang a congratulatory banner or party lights. You can create a theme based on the graduate’s interests or keep it simple with some crepe paper and balloons. The possibilities are endless if you keep a creative mindset.

Create a timeline leading up to the day of the party, and keep track of your to-do lists. The more organized you are, the less stressful your party will be.

A Place to Party

If your home is not large enough for your soirée or you want a change of scenery, there are plenty of places to accommodate you. For a gathering in the great outdoors, the McHenry County Conservation District takes reservations for their many picnic shelters. Visit www.mccdistrict.org or call 815-338-6223 for more information.

The Gardens of Woodstock (5211 Swanson Road in Woodstock, 815-337-2509, www.gardensofwoodstock.com) also has a beautiful room to host your get-together. The Gardens’ meeting room can accommodate up to 75 people, and catering is available. Call 815-337-2509 for more information.

Food and Drink

Mark Hudak, owner and chef of 3 Chefs Catering (308 W. Virginia St. in Crystal Lake, 815-788-1333, www.3chefscatering.com) says to make catering arrangements three to four weeks before your party. Know the number of people you will need to feed, what time you will need food delivered and where. 3 Chefs, and other caterers, offer many services that can make serving your guests easier on you, such as setup and breakdown, wait staff and bartenders, and china, silverware and table rental.

Don’t Forget the Sweets

No party would be complete without a cake Sugar Hills Bakery (644 S. Main Street in Algonquin, 847-658-8765, www.sugarhillsbakery.com) creates amazing custom cakes that look and taste wonderful.
