Treating the ‘Whole Person’

Written by Aracely Hernandez | Monday, August 15 2011 11:45
Treating the ‘Whole Person’

Dr. Jill Howe and the Dynamic Health & Wellness team in Crystal Lake treat area patients suffering with pain by using a holistic approach to wellness.

Dr. Jill Howe wants you to take away your pain and make you feel better all over.

At her Crystal Lake practice Dynamic Health & Wellness, the 20-year chiropractor and her team take a holistic approach to medicine.

Holistic medicine isn’t trendy jargon, Howe said — it’s an approach that looks at all aspects of a client’s life to find out  why he or she is experiencing pain.

“We look at the whole person,” Howe explained. “If you have a headache, we look at your whole body. We look at your lifestyle, diet, posture and history as far as accidents and injuries. We also look at what kind of job you do and what positions you have to hold for long times during the day.”

A Team Approach

Dynamic Health & Wellness’ team includes three on-site chiropractors, a medical doctor, a physician’s assistant, a nurse practitioner, two licensed massage therapists, and rehab and medical assistants.

Howe said the wellness team evaluates each client before treatment is sought.

“This is a place where you find out what’s lacking and find out why your health is non-optimal,” she said. “If we can’t help them, we tell them. We have several different doctors in the area that we work with.

“It’s wellness in every sense of the word,” Howe continued. “Most times, they get better than they were before.”

She said once the team evaluates the client’s history and the tests the medical doctor and chiropractor has run, a case is presented to the client.

The client is invited bring his or her their significant other or caretaker who not only acts as a support system, but becomes part of the decision-making process when deciding on treatment.

“When the spouse understands the cause of the patient’s problem, they’re able to be more supportive and a part of the solution,” she said.

When the spouse understands what ails the client, he or she is more understanding and can also work out a schedule for treatment, Howe explained.

Neuropathy Therapy

Many of Dynamic’s clients are referred to the center by patients who have had success there. Still others learn about Dynamic Health & Wellness though free workshops Howe provides on such subjects as headaches, female hormones and neuropathy.

Howe said she is most proud of being able to help clients who are suffering from neuropathy.

Neuropathy is a condition where the nerves are dying resulting in pain, cold and a tingling sensation in the hands and/or feet, she explained.

“Someone may have survived cancer, but the chemicals used to cure it can cause this condition,” Howe said. “Medically, they can’t do anything to help the nerves. We have a therapy that helps.”

She said that one of her clients with multiple sclerosis has significantly showed improvement.

A Gym in the Works

For previous clients and others who want to continue their wellness routine, a gym with personal trainers will open at the Crystal Lake site in the beginning of 2012.

Howe’s husband, Larry Berg — who is in charge of marketing — is working on opening they gym, which has yet to be named.

“Many times a patient feels so good they want to keep up their therapy under supervision,” Howe said.

The gym will give patients this opportunity.
