A Scenic Stroll’ Through Local Homes

Written by Erica Burke | Tuesday, August 18 2009 00:00
A Scenic Stroll’ Through Local Homes
Take a sneak peek at homes featured in the Service League of Crystal Lake’s 35th Annual Housewalk.

From newer homes to an 80-year-old residence that was entirely renovated, the Service League of Crystal Lake’s 35th Annual Housewalk is expected to be quite a draw this September.

“There will be four homes this year – two in Prairie Grove and two in Lakewood,” said Sheila Biell, publicity coordinator.

This year’s theme of “A Scenic Stroll” really shines through each home’s “wonderful outdoor scenes,” according to Marci Dagley, housewalk chair.

Hot Ticket
The 2009 Housewalk will be on Friday, September 18.  Homes are open from either 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and again from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 when purchased in advance, and $25 the day of the event. Seniors, 62 and older, can purchase their tickets for $15.

Tickets are available through the league’s Web site and through league members, the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce (427 W. Virginia St., 815-459-1300), as well as at local businesses such as Countryside Nursery (301 E. Terra Cotta Ave., 815-459-8130).

Attendees might also win some cash – raffle tickets will be sold for $5, or 5 tickets for $20. They are available through league members and in the homes the day of the walk. The $1,000 prize drawing will be held after 9 p.m. on the 18th.

Other perks ticket-holders receive include the following: 1776 Restaurant: 10 percent off meal; Distinction Salon and Spa: 25 percent off any new service; and Pinemoor Pizza: $2 off any large pizza.

“People attending the Housework can expect to have fun while gaining wonderful interior design and landscaping ideas,” Dagley said.

Helping the Community
Attending directly supports the Service League’s efforts to help the community.

Last year, the Housewalk raised $30,000. The Service League uses all of the money raised to reach out to families in need, and award educational scholarships to local students who need financial assistance. The goal this year is to top $30,000.

“The Crystal Lake Service League is an organization that is more than 80 years old,” Biell said. “It is comprised of women volunteers who work to raise funds all year long. The purpose is to serve those in need in the community.  “We work to fill gaps in many areas.”

“The housewalk is our largest annual fundraiser,” she added. “In today’s economy, we are seeing are much greater need to help our neighbors.

“No one can do it alone, and this is a terrific way to enjoy a day and help others at the same time.”
