After Nearly 50 Years, Clothes Gallery Closes Its Doors: A Legacy of Style, Service, and Community
One of McHenry County's longest-running women-owned boutiques is preparing to say goodbye. Clothes Gallery, a beloved fixture at 51 N. Williams St. in Downtown Crystal Lake for nearly five decades, is closing as owner Sherree and her husband Michael Rothstein head into a much-deserved retirement.
The story of Clothes Gallery begins in 1978, when the boutique first opened its doors and quickly became a local favorite. In 1995, Sherree and Michael purchased both the store and the building. The previous owner had sold off all inventory, leaving the Rothsteins to start from scratch.
"We took over a store with no stock, no merchandise – just an empty space and a vision," says Sherree. "My goal was always to offer more than just clothing. I wanted to build relationships and offer an experience customers couldn't find anywhere else."
That vision held for 30 years under Sherree's ownership – and nearly 50 years total for the boutique itself – making Clothes Gallery one of the most enduring women-owned businesses in the region.
Through the aftermath of 9/11, the 2008 recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Sherree and her highly trained staff never wavered in their commitment to styling the women of Northern Illinois with sophistication, care, and a touch of sass.
The boutique's deepest legacy is the generations of women it served. Mothers, daughters, and grandmothers have shared memories inside these walls – shopping for special occasions, finding the perfect gift, or simply trusting Clothes Gallery's staff to help them look and feel their best.
"Our customers are family," says Sherree. "It's been amazing to see moms bring in their daughters, grandmothers bring in their granddaughters. They trusted us, and those relationships mean everything."
Now, as Clothes Gallery prepares to close its doors for good, the community has one last chance to celebrate the store that defined personal style in Crystal Lake for generations. The Going Out of Business Sale is happening now through early summer – with deep discounts on everything in the store. Every rack, every shelf, everything must go. “I am deeply grateful for the loyalty, love and support that made our dream possible, and we hope you'll stop in one last time,” she said.
